Many babies cannot digest lactose in milk and this is why they have thin stools. Stool reducing substance (R/S) to determine whether lactose intolerance occurs in thin stools.
Mix well with stool and distilled water in a test tube to make a solution.
Take a 6" inch test tube with 5ml benedicts solution to heat the spirt lamp.
When the solution is heated, if the color of the solution does not change, then mix 4 drops of stool solution with it and boil it again with heat.
If the color of the mixture changes to green, yellow or red after heating. The report should include reducing substance (R/S).
Stool Reducing Substance (R/S) Report:
For green: Green or (+),
For yellows: Yellow or (++),
For Orange: Orange or (+++),
For red: Red or (+++).
And if there is no change in color, then write stool reducing substance: nil.
